Changes Explanation

The above entry, and some upcoming entries, are a series of pictures that Tom and I have taken over the past two years in Georgia. We didn't set out to document the changes happening so quickly around us, we simply were taking pictures of our life here. One day, I was looking through some old pictures and thought, "Hey, that doesn't look like that anymore!" And so this photo essay was born.

The first entry is of our heaters. That's obvious. Last year, we used a kerosene heater in our bedroom. When we ran out of kerosene, our host father ran out and bought more. This year, we're using an electric heater. When we want to be warm, we plug it into the wall. But, the ease and convienence is not the biggest difference that these pictures imply. Last year, we went several days in a row on several occasions without electricity at all. We'd have spent a very cold winter trying to use an electric heater last year! The electricity situation in Kutaisi still isn't perfect, but it has improved dramatically in just a year's time.

More to come....
