Everyone says that Georgians are so friendly and love guests, but for the first few days, I have to admit I was a little confused. No one ever greeted me in the street, even to say good morning or offer a friendly smile.
However, since we have been going to the same corner store and walking the same route for a few days now, it seems people have realized we're not going anywhere for awhile. I started saying "mila mshvidobisa"* to the bebias (grandmothers) on my way to school and they said it back. Tom introduced us to the women at the store on Stalin Ave, and now they greet us everyday. Elza ( my language and cultural facilitator : teacher) introduced me to the woman at the store near school who now smiles and asks me how I am when I go in to buy water or an ice cream at break.
It seems that they just needed to get to know us a little. Georgians are a beautiful and friendly bunch. I"m looking forward to getting to know more.
