Retraction of Past Statements

Okay, Okay, Tom has been HOUNDING be about the road up to Monteverde ever since I said that the road was not bad. I suppose I do owe an explanation. What I meant was that the road was not washed away so much so that we could not tell where it was. By American standards, it was one of the worst roads I've ever seen and was honestly one of the scariest drives I've ever been on. The only road which was worse was one I was in when I lived in Mexico right after they had terrible mudslides which killed hundreds of people. Tom is thinking about printing bumber stickers to sell to the other tourists in their Diahatsu's that say " Mt. Washington is for Wimps, I drove to Monteverde" The road was a dry clay like dust with "gravel" chunks about the size of my fist in the smaller version and about the size of my head in the more common size. The width of the road was also about as wide as my head. Okay, that's not true, but it was about only large enough for our Diahatsu and one of the 4 wheelers the locals drive to get around, or a horse, and even then it was a little close. In most cases, one vehicle had to stop entirely to let the other pass so as not to send either cascading over the edge and down the cliffs below.

The road SINCE Monteverde has been excellent in comparison. The road around Lake Arenal was paved, or at least had been at some point in the past. Potholes ranging in size from JFK Airport to the entire state of New Jersey made that drive in the dusk only slightly less nervewracking. We did however catch a glimpse of a Toucan and some Howler monkeys along the edge of the lake. The Toucan's beak is amazingly huge, you would really be surprised.

We've seen all kinds of amazing wildlife and hope for more in the adventures to come.

Keep posting, we love the comments!!

It's clear that you live somewhat north of the border-
Because I have noticed a certain disorder:
Instead of just munching on veggie tempura
And just taking in all of that great vida pura,
The lawyerly scope of your blog interactions,
Debating the byways and printing retractions,
When you could be viewing the roadside attractions!
One thing above all though- it makes me say 'hey' -
You guys have grown up in the ol' U-S-A...
For who else would bother to post a retort
Consisting of mainly a traffic report?!?
